How to Preserve and Frame Old Family Photos So They Last Forever

February 28, 2026

Why Old Photos Need Special Care

That photo of your grandparents' wedding, your father in uniform, or your family gathered on the front porch — these are irreplaceable. Regular framing can actually damage old photographs through acid contact, UV exposure, and moisture.

Archival framing uses conservation-grade materials that protect your photos for generations. Here's what you need to know.

Step 1: Handle With Care

Before you bring an old photo in for framing:

Don't try to clean it yourselfchemicals, even water, can cause permanent damage

Handle by the edgesoils from your fingers can stain the image

Keep it flat in a clean envelope or folder

Don't use tape or adhesivethese cause irreversible damage over time

Step 2: Consider Restoration First

If your photo is faded, torn, stained, or water-damaged, restoration should happen before framing. We offer professional photo restoration that can:

Repair tears, creases, and missing corners

Remove stains and water damage

Restore faded colors and contrast

Create a high-quality reproduction to frame (preserving the original untouched)

We always recommend framing a restored copy and storing the original separately in archival conditions.

Step 3: Choose the Right Framing Materials

Acid-Free Mat Board

Standard mat board contains acids that will yellow and stain your photo over time. Always use acid-free, lignin-free, or cotton rag mat board for old photos.

UV-Filtering Glass

Sunlight is the number one enemy of photographs. UV-filtering glass blocks 97–99% of harmful rays. Museum glass is the gold standard — it also eliminates reflections so you can see the photo clearly.

Archival Mounting

Never dry-mount an old photo — it's irreversible. We use archival photo corners or hinges that hold the photo securely without any adhesive touching the image.

Sealed Backing

A proper dust cover on the back keeps out insects, moisture, and debris. We seal every frame with conservation-grade backing.

Step 4: Choose Where to Hang It

Even with UV glass, avoid hanging old photos:

In direct sunlight

Over heat sources (radiators, fireplaces)

In high-humidity rooms (bathrooms, kitchens)

On exterior walls (temperature swings cause moisture issues)

A hallway, study, or interior living room wall is ideal.

What Does Archival Photo Framing Cost?

Conservation framing for old photos typically runs $120–$250 depending on size, mat style, and glass type. The extra cost over standard framing is small compared to the value of the photo.
