What Goes Into Custom Framing Pricing? An Honest Guide for Boston Customers

March 28, 2026

Why We Don't Publish Prices Online

Every framing job we do is custom — the moulding, the mat, the glass, the size, and the construction work all change with the piece. Two photos that look the same size can end up at very different prices depending on whether you choose conservation glass or standard, a single mat or a triple, a basic moulding or a hand-finished one.

That's why we work out the pricing in person, with the piece in front of us, after you've picked the materials. It's the only way we can give you an accurate number — and the only way you can see exactly what you're paying for.

What Drives the Price

When you bring a piece in for custom framing, four things drive the final number: the frame moulding, the mat, the glass, and the size of your piece.

Frame Moulding

The frame itself is usually the biggest cost driver. Simple wood or aluminum mouldings are the most affordable. Ornate, hand-finished, or imported Italian mouldings cost more. We carry hundreds of options so there's always something that fits your budget and your style.

Matting

Mats add depth and protect your artwork from touching the glass. A single mat is the most affordable option. Double or triple matting, specialty fabrics, or conservation-grade mats add to the cost — but they make a big visual difference.

Glass

Standard clear glass is the most affordable. Non-glare glass reduces reflections. UV-filtering conservation glass prevents fading over time. Museum glass (anti-reflective plus UV protection) is the premium choice — ideal for valuable artwork or pieces in bright rooms.

Size

Larger pieces require more material and more labor. A standard 8×10 photo will cost significantly less than a 24×36 poster or an oversized canvas.

How to Get the Best Value

**Bring the piece in.** We sit down with you, walk through every option, and show you what each choice does to the price. You see materials side by side and pick what fits — we never push toward the most expensive option.

**Ask about our current promotions.** We frequently run seasonal discounts. Ask when you come in.

**Consider what matters most.** If it's a poster you'll swap out in a few years, basic framing works great. If it's your grandmother's painting or your child's diploma, investing in conservation materials protects it for decades.
